If you've got a crawling baby or a dog who lives on the couch, this is the question that matters more than the price. The honest answer is: it depends entirely on what the cleaner puts on your carpet and how well they rinse it out. Here's what to look for and what to ask.
What's in a typical carpet cleaning solution
Conventional pre-sprays and rinses can include solvents like butoxyethanol, synthetic fragrances, optical brighteners, and in some cheaper products, perchloroethylene — the same solvent used in dry cleaning. Fumes during the clean are the obvious concern, but the bigger long-term issue is residue.
Why residue matters more than fumes
Fumes clear in an hour with the windows open. Residue doesn't. When a cleaning solution isn't fully rinsed out, it dries into the carpet fibres as a sticky film. Babies crawl on it, put their hands in their mouths, and lie face-down on it. Dogs lick their paws after walking on it. And the film attracts dirt, so the carpet re-soils faster and you end up cleaning again sooner, adding another layer.
This is the strongest argument for truck-mounted hot water extraction over dry methods and portable machines: the rinse actually removes what was put in.

How long to keep kids and pets off
- During the clean: keep them in another room or outside, mainly so nobody trips on hoses.
- Until dry: two to four hours with truck-mounted extraction and the aircon on. Damp carpet isn't harmful, but it marks and flattens under feet and paws.
- After a flea treatment: follow the specific drying time we give you on the day, and keep pets off until the treated carpet is completely dry.
- After that: no restrictions. Crawl, roll, sleep on it.
Five questions to ask any carpet cleaner
- What products do you use, and can you tell me what's in them?
- Are they safe for children and pets once dry?
- Do you rinse with a truck-mounted machine, or a portable?
- How long until the carpet is dry?
- Will there be any residue?
A good cleaner will answer all five without hesitating. If you get vague answers, or "industrial strength" is offered as a selling point, keep looking.
