Accidents happen, and when they do, your carpets often bear the brunt. Whether it's a spilled drink, a pet accident or muddy footprints, knowing how to treat carpet stains quickly can prevent long-term damage. Here's a simple guide to treating ten common stains at home.

1. Red wine

Blot the stain with a clean cloth to soak up excess wine. Sprinkle salt to absorb the liquid, then rinse with cold water.

2. Coffee

Blot up the coffee and mix one tablespoon of white vinegar with two cups of warm water. Apply the solution with a cloth, blotting until the stain fades.

3. Pet urine

Blot the area with paper towels, then apply a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water. Let it sit for ten minutes, then blot up. If the smell lingers, the urine has reached the underlay — that's when you need a professional enzyme treatment.

4. Ink

Place a cloth under the stain if you can, then dab with rubbing alcohol using a clean cloth. Keep blotting until the ink lifts.

5. Mud

Let the mud dry completely before vacuuming. Once dry, use a mixture of water and dish soap to gently blot the area.

6. Blood

Rinse the stained area with cold water immediately — never hot, which sets the protein. Apply a paste of baking soda and water, leave it for 30 minutes, then blot and rinse.

7. Chocolate

Gently scrape off excess chocolate, then blot the stain with a cloth dipped in warm, soapy water.

8. Juice

Blot up excess juice, then apply a mixture of one tablespoon dish soap, one tablespoon white vinegar and two cups of water.

9. Oil

Sprinkle cornstarch or baby powder over the oil stain and let it sit for 15 minutes to absorb the oil, then vacuum.

10. Gum

Freeze the gum by placing ice cubes in a plastic bag and resting it on the stain for 10–15 minutes. Once brittle, it lifts off.
